Collecting swag is a given at a games show, and collecting business cards is just as fun. Not only does it mean I’m getting to meet people that live outside my kitchen, but I get to go all design geeky and assess the relative awesomeness of the ultimate business trading item. That’s right, I bring you the best of PAX. Stuff you didn’t even know you wanted to see.
The victors of PAX 2009 are as follows:
Second runner-up is Chris Foster, Project Director at Harmonix. Going with the alternate shape business card and an understated design that says “I’m so rock and roll I don’t give a damn that this card will get lost in your wallet”.
First runner-up is Kyu Lee, President of Gamevil, for a b.c. with a slick design and farmed from some alien locale. Feels like it’s part styrofoam, part unidentified substance – it’s the most mesmerizing paper I’ve yet encountered.
It’s not just his game cleaning up at these events, the clear winner of PAX 2009 Best in Show: Business Cards is Arne Meyer, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications at Naughty Dog, with the coolest all-around card at the show. A graphic masterpiece themed to their product – and embossed! – this one has a shot at card of the year.

I’m Community Manager and Admin for the NewsBoiler Network, home to N4G, TechSpy, AnimeShinbun, FilmWatch and 11×2. I also write for network editorial site, ZTGD.

1That Naughty Dog card is eye-popping! Kinda baroque, I love it. That isn’t just a business card, that’s practically a pocket advertisement. That’s one card you definitely won’t be losing in your wallet!
Though the lime green does nothing for me (though it certainly gets your attention), the layout and typesetting of that Gamevil card are well done.
I can’t help but wonder how plain the other cards you received must have been if that Harmonix card made into your top 3. That mic looks like stock art ripped straight out of Word. A little disappointing coming from Harmonix.

3Yeah, I guess what doesn’t come across as well in the scan is that the card has a very understated day-of-radio and payola feel to it. It’s just a ballsy, rock and roll kinda card in its sheer “meh” ness.
A lot of the cards did follow a similar template, it’s true, very corporate.
